"With two City Council seats open and just one incumbent running, Claremont voters will have seven candidates to choose from in the March 8 election.

Not surprisingly for this college town, the field of contenders is packed with talent, skills and smarts.

The Daily Bulletin supports ... Ellen Taylor for the seat being vacated by Paul Held.

Taylor boasts a background of devotion to airing differences in a civil way and reaching decisions through reasoned discussion - exactly what's needed now. She founded and organized the Claremont Study Circles Dialogue Groups to bring citizens together after the Landrum shooting. She's been part of the League of Women Voters of Claremont since 1974 and was president from 1992 to 1994.

She spent eight years on the city's Traffic and Transportation Commission and chaired it for two years. Manager of a Claremont law office, she was president of the Chamber of Commerce for a year. Taylor has been a board member of Claremont Heritage and of Friends of the Claremont Public Library, and part of just about every other civic organization in town.

Open government is tops on her list of priorities. She wants to improve library services and to work with the Trust for Public Lands and Claremont Wildlands Conservancy to preserve as much of Claremont's hillside area as possible.

Taylor favors development of an affordable-housing policy and says the city should have made sure there was an affordable residential component in the Village West project. She has sound ideas for economic development and wants to make sure the council is strong enough to implement the new General Plan once it's adopted.

On March 8, vote for ... Ellen Taylor for Claremont City Council.
Endorsement published by The Daily Bulletin, February 21, 2005.

"Ms. Taylor is a unique person. She has led a combination of groups within the city and offered strong leadership. Those organizations include 8 years on the city's traffic and transportation commission, a group sometimes overlooked as a key element in the city structure. She has also led the Claremont League of Women Voters, an organization that speaks for itself as to importance, and the Claremont Chamber of Commerce. That position has enabled her to understand and work with the city's business community.

Few candidates for public office in Claremont have been able to combine the public services noted above and to speak out with authority on each. Ms. Taylor also led a campaign, part of a national study, which related to the future course of American cities and the solutions to their problems. We could not ask for a person who better understands the operations of municipal government.

... Whatever one thinks of the council's current divisions, we must strike a bold, open course for the city and stick to it when casting votes. Claremont's tomorrow will be in good hands with Ellen Taylor ..."
Endorsement published by the Claremont Courier, March 2, 2005.
