 | Ellen's Comments at the Campaign Kick-Off PartyThank you all for coming out this rainy Sunday afternoon [January 9, 2005]. I appreciate your presence more than you will ever know.
Twenty-seven years ago, when Marshall and I moved to Claremont I had no idea I would be standing up here kicking off my campaign for the Claremont City Council. We loved this community from the beginning because it enveloped us - made us feel welcomed and made our contributions seem appreciated. When Marshall opened his law office 20 years ago, our level of involvement increased, but running for office was still not in my plans.
However, here we are, I stand before you and have to talk to a group of people about why I am running for City Council ... read more...

Election Night March 8, 2005The Election Night Party will be at the Woman's Club of Claremont, 343 West 12th Street - starting at 8 p.m.
Join the candidate to watch the results of the election as they are released by City Hall. The party will be a special time to thank the many people who worked for Ellen's campaign, and others in the community, who wish to share the evening with the campaign committee. Refreshments, including Ellen Berry Ice Cream, the special flavor concocted by Bert & Rocky's for Ellen's campaign, will be available.

I am running for city council to bring my experience as a community leader and volunteer to the council. Vision, respect and consensus will be my watchwords. Let me share my objectives with you.
With an understanding of the past and an eye to the future, I will work to achieve
- wise land-use planning
- sensible economic development
- prudent and balanced fiscal decisions
- well planned affordable housing
- historic preservation
- improved town-gown relations
- hillsides preservation
- expanded public library service
- control over our resources
- regional solutions to transportation problems
I plan to raise the issue of respect in this campaign: respect for the validity of other people's concerns and experiences, for history and our cultural heritage, and for the competence of our city staff.
Consensus building is one of the core attributes of leadership. Because of my ability to help groups arrive at consensus, I have been elected president or board chair of organizations as varied as Claremont's Traffic and Transportation Commission, the Claremont League of Women Voters, and the Claremont Chamber of Commerce. With your help and your vote, I can bring this background to the City Council.
Please get involved. I welcome your views and your donations of time, skills, and money. I need your involvement to succeed in this campaign.
